Webber's Requiem is not intended to be a massive-scale composition on the order of Verdi, Mozart, Brahms, Mahler, Faure, or Britten. That isn't the sort of composer Webber is and is not what he was trying to accomplish. Andrew Lloyd Webber's first and only large-scale classical work was his 1985 Requiem, composed shortly before he dabbled in opera miniatures for The Phantom of the Opera, both of which were written for the stratospheric vocal range of his then-wife, soprano Sarah Brightman. Mr. Lloyd Webber's Requiem, unfortunately, tells us nothing new. What he does manage to do with his smooth, grateful melodic lines and familiar dramatic props is to accommodate the ideas of a great Webber's Requiem is his most personal composition, and his only fully completed classical work. The requiem is a striking, yet welcome, departure from the style of music for which Lloyd Webber is known.
